THE ELIZABETH OLSON MEMORIAL GRANT

Elizabeth 'Beth' Ziegler Olson

1936-2006

Beth was nationally active almost since the inception of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and is an integral part of the history of the Columbus Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (CCONS). She was one of the 12 nurses who, in 1981, began planning what was to become CCONS. Beth's leadership, mentorship, and professional acumen helped build our chapter to what it is today from a membership of the 12 founding members to over 150 nurses who her share her passion.

Beth worked at several hospitals in the Columbus area including Grant Medical Center before her role as surgical oncology clinical nurse specialist at The James; she worked as an oncology nurse for over 20 years.  She became the first secretary for CCONS in 1982, served as newsletter editor from 1988-1992, and then served on the program committee for many years. Beth worked as Director for Nursing Staff Development and Patient Education at The James Cancer Hospital from 1995 through her retirement in 1999. In 2000, Beth was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and fought a courageous battle  with the disease until May 19, 2006.

Beth's quiet strength inspired many new and seasoned oncology nurses to reach higher than they ever thought possible. Because Beth was an integral part of CCONS and ONS, we wanted to acknowledge her in a special way. Members of CCONS recognize the value a nurse has in the lives of oncology patients. To ensure that nurses, today and tomorrow, have the skills necessary to improve cancer care and maximize their impact on cancer, CCONS created the Elizabeth Olson Memorial Grant, in memory of their colleague.

“Beth felt called and committed to the nursing profession, particularly oncology care. She sought to provide excellent  nursing care and quality patient education so that individuals could make informed decisions about their medical care. She would be honored and grateful that CCONS is supporting professional scholarships."

Beth's family

The Beth Olson Memorial Grant was developed with monies that were to be awarded for a project directed toward patient education. The following nurses received this grant for their patient education projects.
